72 year-old Brigitte Fontaine is an avant-garde singer who has been at the cutting edge of French popular music and culture for almost 50 years. Also a novelist, writer, actress, playwright and poet, her musical collaborations in the past have included artists as diverse as Stereolab, The Gotan Project, Sonic Youth, Grace Jones and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. She enjoys ‘cult status’ in France and across Europe. Grace Jones features also on this album alongside duets and collaborations with some of the top musicians and performers in French music today – Arno, Christophe, Matthieu Chedid, Alain Souchon, Jacques Higelin, Emmanuelle Seigner, Bertrand Cantat, and Fontaine’s partner Areksi Belkacem. In 2006, Fontaine appeared at The Barbican in London alongside Jarvis Cocker and Badly Drawn Boy and other for the first public interpretation of Gainsbourg’s mythic ‘Histoire De Melody Nelson’ further advancing her credibility in the UK. In 2009 her last album ‘Prohibition’ was a huge commercial success in France and was notable also for an anti-authority political stance.
